The Greek War of Independence (1821-1827) is especially remembered for the Battle of Navarino and was marked by numerous clashes between Greek corsairs and Turkish-Egyptian ships.

Agile and with a shallow draft, the galeottas could easily take refuge in the small coves of the Aegean islands and then, with quick strokes of the oar, attack Turkish ships.
