An Icon of Power and Versatility

The xebec, originally a vessel of Arab origin, embodies maritime mastery and the versatility of Mediterranean ships.

With its three lateen-rigged masts and a weight varying between 150 and 200 tons, the xebec was distinguished by its ability to adapt to a variety of roles.

Although generally armed with 14 medium-caliber cannons and 6 culverins for close combat, it often also performed cargo transport duties.

Origins and Function

Originally conceived perhaps as a vessel for fishing with nets, the xebec was characterized by its ability to navigate both by sail and oar. With a rigging system on 3 masts and a number of oars that could vary from eight to twelve, the xebec was ideal for the enclosed waters of the Mediterranean, where it could maneuver agilely even in adverse wind conditions.

In addition to its war feats, the xebec played an important role in Mediterranean exploration and trade routes, becoming a valuable ally for merchants and explorers of the era.

A Golden Age and Its Spread

During the 18th century, the xebec experienced its peak period, becoming an important asset for Mediterranean navies. Used by Spain, Sardinia, the Kingdom of Naples, the Papal States, Venice, and other powers, the xebec became a crucial tool in the fight against Barbary corsairs.

Although time has taken its sails and its wood has disintegrated, the xebec remains an iconic figure, a testament to maritime mastery and the boundless adventure of ancient seas.
