Coca

The Coca was a vessel built in the 15th century and used mainly for cargo transport.
To defend against pirate attacks, it was equipped with two defensive castles placed at the bow and stern.

Long-range observation was possible through the crow’s nest on the single mast. This mast was almost as tall as the ship’s length: this feature, along with the rounded hold, gave the ship a unique appearance.

From this type of ship came the Santa Maria of Christopher Columbus.
The most famous example is the Coca of Mataró, built as an ex-voto, used to study the evolution of merchant shipping.
