The Era of Whaling

In the 19th century, New Bedford was the center of the thriving American whaling industry. Whaleboats, robust and maneuverable, were the vessels used for whale hunting, vital for the region's economy.

Built to withstand the rigors of the open sea, these ships were symbols of an era when whale oil was a precious resource for lighting and soap production.

Design and Functionality

The typical New Bedford whaleboat, used until 1860, was light and sturdy with overlapping planking and similar bow and stern.

Besides six crew members, the boat carried about 40 essential items for navigation and hunting. These boats could be dragged for long stretches by harpooned whales, with returns sometimes taking more than two days.

Freshwater, provisions, tobacco, mast, sails, and compass were always on board - essential for surviving in the open sea.

A Story of Courage and Adventure

Whaling expeditions were very dangerous and adventurous: they required a good dose of courage and skill.

Whaling crews faced stormy seas and giant whales, often in difficult conditions.

Each journey was a test of endurance and determination, and the whaleboats were at the heart of these epic adventures.
